History –
The San Francisco Bay Times in 1978 became the first LGBT newspaper in California, and among the first in the world, to be jointly and equally produced by lesbians and gay men. We honor our history and the paper’s ability to build and strengthen unity in our community. The SF Bay Times is the only LGBT newspaper in San Francisco, since its origin and until the present day, to have always been 100% LGBT funded and owned. The Bay Times has never been owned, in whole or in part, by anyone who is not LGBT identified.

In 2021, the San Francisco Bay Times was honored to be recognized with Legacy Business status by the City of San Francisco. San Francisco Bay Times co-publishers/editors Betty Sullivan and Jennifer Viegas were honored to receive the Selisse Berry Leadership Award at the Business of Pride Ceremony hosted by Mary Huss, publisher of the San Francisco Business Times. Also during 2021, the San Francisco Bay Times was invited by The Academy SF to launch a new series of events welcoming to the Castro women and their friends of all genders. San Francisco Mayor London Breed launched the series along with ABC7 News anchor Dion Lim and emcee Donna Sachet.
In 2022, the San Francisco Bay Times was honored to be named Best Newspaper for Media Excellence & Community Service by the Best of the West Media Awards of the American Advertising Federation Western Region. The San Francisco Bay Times was honored to be named by the Golden Gate Business Association as Small Business of the Year at the annual Power Connect event held during Pride Month.

Dr. Betty Sullivan and Jennifer Viegas are the Co-Publishers/Co-Editors of the San Francisco Bay Times. Founded in 1978, the San Francisco Bay Times was the first LGBTQ publication in California, and among the first in the world, to be jointly and equally created by gay men and lesbians. The goal of fostering unity and balance in the Bay Area’s LGBTQ community continues today as a key part of the media company’s mission. The San Francisco Bay Times is the oldest and largest paper for the LGBTQ community in the San Francisco Bay Area that has been, and always will be, 100% funded and owned by LGBTQ individuals.
Dr. Betty Sullivan is additionally the founder of “Betty’s List,” the online and e-mail information service for the Bay Area’s LGBTQ community. A longstanding advocate for the use of media as a tool for information, teaching and learning, Dr. Sullivan has produced digital and print programs for The New York Times, United States Olympic Committee, The White House, American Bar Association, League of American Theaters and Producers, Walt Disney on Ice, PBS and more.
The Co-Founder of Use the News Foundation, she is also a founding member of the World Association of Newspapers’ Youth & Education Committee. She has conducted media education seminars and workshops at Harvard, Columbia, universities throughout South Africa, and at other international venues. She was Education Director of the Newspaper Association of American Foundation in Washington, D.C., and has held positions at The New York Times, USA TODAY, New York Newsday, San Francisco Chronicle and The Commercial Appeal. Dr. Sullivan holds a doctorate in linguistics from Columbia University and received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001 from Columbia Teacher’s College in New York City.
Jennifer Viegas is a founding member of the Discovery Channel news team. For the past two decades she has worked on some of the network’s most popular series, such as Walking with Dinosaurs, Planet Earth, Blue Planet, and Life, as well as on reports that have led to research method changes benefiting king penguins, sea turtles and numerous other species. She is also a senior journalist and biographer for the National Academy of Sciences. As a media consultant, she has worked for WGBH, BBC World Service, ABC News, MSNBC, The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, The Washington Post, Sociologists for Women in Society, “The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” and others.
Ms. Viegas has authored over 20 books, including the first textbook on stem cell research. She also wrote the world’s first detailed reports linking climate change to environmental and human health effects. Former Vice President Al Gore used the data in the Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth and during the 2000 presidential debates. Ms. Viegas graduated with honors from Wellesley College and is a member of Wellesley Women for Hillary Clinton.
