Sister Dana sez, “It’s PRIDE MONTH!”

    By Sister Dan Sez—

Sister Dana sez, “It’s PRIDE MONTH, and I couldn’t be prouder to be Gay! Despite Congress trying to pass an astonishing 530 anti-LGBTQ bills in the U.S. this year. Despicable!!!”

I am excited to announce the June 12 opening of RuPaul’s movie, Stop That Train! This is a hilarious drag parody of those old ’70s and ’80s disaster flicks, but here Ru is President of the USA! OMG!

It was Harvey Milk Day on May 22, so we activists met in front of the Queer AF art store (Harvey’s old camera shop and gay activist hangout decades ago) at 575 Castro Street where the theme was “Support Trans Health!” There we heard many inspiring speeches, including one by the owner of QAF. We picked up placards and walked one whole block (marches are smaller these days) up the middle of Castro Street with the SF Pride Band leading the way to Jane Warner Plaza. The Band got our feet moving in time to “If They Could See Me Now” as we approached the plaza to hear some very inspirational speeches and classic Band music such as “San Francisco (Open Your Golden Gate)”!

About a week later there was the JM! Pride 2026 Artwork Exhibition on May 28 featuring artist Blake Cedric at the GLBT Historical Society Museum. Each year for Pride, Juanita MORE! commissions an artist to create the poster artwork for her annual Pride Party. The artist is first asked to capture the beauty of Juanita MORE!, incorporate her French bulldog, and add something historic that represents the queer mecca of the world, San Francisco. While this painting certainly captures Juanita’s whimsy, in my opinion it does NOT capture her beauty. But go to the museum at 4127 18th Street and see for yourself!

Fabulosa Books presented a mind-blowing Q&A on May 31 with author Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez, who wrote of his experience as a “Conversion Therapy Dropout” in conversation with Matt Nightengale. At first, this was utterly jarring to me, since from 1972–1979 I brainwashed myself into a Xtian cult that preached “homosexuality is the same as murder in the eyes of God.” Yikes! When I tried to tell them this was a total lie, the pastor’s goons gave me an old-fashioned exorcism to remove “the demon in me.” Nonetheless, this amazing book is a gay Christian’s behind-the-scenes account of evangelical mega-churches and eight years in conversion therapy before finding wholeness and authenticity. My two faves from the book: “Gay the Pray Away” and “Born This Gay.”

Flawlessly co-directed by Crystal Liu & John Fisher, “La Cage Aux Folles” is one of musical theatre’s all-time biggest hits but sadly must close after June 14—having had a long run at Theatre Rhinoceros, 4229 18th Street. After 20 years of partnered bliss, Georges and Albin (who run a drag nightclub together) have a challenge, when Georges’ son announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician. Drag hilarity ensues. https://www.therhino.org/

Trump’s proposed 1.776 Billion Dollar Payout (also ridiculously named “The Anti-Weaponization Fund”) was just his attempt to reward the wrongly pardoned and completely freed January 6 rioters—and restock them with weapons to build his personal army in order to attack the outcome of the midterm elections, or whatever despot Donnie’s little evil heart might desire as a militia. Only four Congressional Republicans have refused to officially outlaw that slush fund. Sister Dana sez, “It’s so ironic that the number 1776 refers to our American Revolution against Britain and its King—where Trump is obviously calling himself a king! Dethrone this wretched ruler!”

Under the “ICE Detention Reengineering Initiative,” sweeping plans are being made to build 8 large-scale detention centers and 16 processing places across the country—using warehouses not designed for humans. This is disgusting and disgraceful, not to mention inhumane and immoral! These are NOT the “worst of the worst” immigrants, and many are legal with papers or were snatched in the process of getting proper papers.

But great news because federal judges have ruled that T-rump must have his ugly name removed from having been slapped illegally onto The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. And another victory for us was a federal judge having put a pause on dastardly Donnie’s attempt to give $1.776 million as a slush fund for himself and the rioting insurrectionists of January 6 notoriety. On June 2, the slush fund was temporarily scrapped because of massive Republican outcry. Yet, on June 7, Congressman Schumer’s bill against it was defeated by RepubliCan’ts.

Meanwhile Donald’s face is on a banner on the outer wall of the Department of Justice (where no actual justice is served these days); and we might get a $250 money certificate (a “legal” tender bill) with disgusting Donald’s face on it. Sister Dana sez, “Can I please get change for a $250 bill? No, I really mean a CHANGE FROM it! DON’T allow this in our U.S. Treasury!”

An emotional candlelight vigil sponsored by HIV Advocacy Network on National HIV Long-Term Survivors Day was on June 5 in the heart of the Castro at Harvey Milk Plaza at sunset. We attended and, with the others present, recognized the leadership that San Francisco has played in building up successful models of HIV prevention and care; gave a call to protect the legacy of these investments; honored the memory of those we have lost to HIV and AIDS; and celebrated the many long-term HIV survivors and other leaders who push our movement forward.

As Pride Month has kicked off, and Mayor Lurie announced his budget, we participated in a timely community rally on June 7 at 16th & Mission streets, “Love, Health, & Solidarity. We brought together LGBTQ leaders, healthcare advocates, community organizations, and local activists to oppose healthcare funding cuts and highlight their impact on vulnerable communities. The rally was organized as part of the nationwide “Seven Days in June” campaign, and participants included Juanita MORE!, Dr. Monica Gandhi (UCSF), Tina Aguirre (Castro Cultural District), Ani Rivera (Galería de la Raza), Gael Lala-Chávez (LYRIC), Roberto Ordenana (GLBT Historical Society), J. Gia Loving (GSA Network), Olga Talamante, Xochitl, and other community leaders and advocates.

Also of note for later this month, now in its seventh year, “The People’s March & Rally”—founded by San Francisco activists Juanita MORE! and Alex U. Inn—is shifting its focus to a Trans Ally Rally, centering transgender and BIPOC voices at a time of growing legislative attacks on trans communities nationwide. Organized in partnership with SF Pride, Indivisible San Francisco, SF Dyke March, and SF Dykes on Bikes, the protest aims to mobilize allies and reconnect Pride with its activist roots. So, on Saturday, June 27, 10 am Embarcadero Plaza, Market and Steuart streets, activists will gather and then march at 10:30 am, Embarcadero to Civic Center.

Heels for Hopewas a vivacious variety show fundraiser for Maitri at Marines’ Memorial Theatre on June 6. The headliner was the great RuPaul Season 10 drag winner Ginger Minj belting out rainbow songs with guest performers Fou Fou Ha and comic Jonny Stein. https://www.maitrisf.org/

Donald J. (“J” for “Jerk”) Trump went to the Walter Reed Hospital for the third time this term and stated, “Everything checked out PERFECTLY. I got all A’s!” But will we ever hear the TRUE results from a real doctor? Trump’s red, bruised hand and swollen ankles say differently. He takes observable naps in the middle of his meetings. And who brags about taking a fourth cognitive test? Only those who had questions about their mental wellness—that’s who. This PresiDense is not fit for office obviously. Sister Dana sez, “Can’t Congress get rid of Trump as President on the grounds of acute mental and physical illness, as well as 34 felony convictions?! Yeah, sure. I won’t hold my breath.”
