2026 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass So Popular That Entrance Gates Temporarily Closed for First Time in Festival’s History

For 26 years, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass has turned San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park into one of the country’s most welcoming outdoor music gatherings, and this year’s festival continued that tradition from October 2–4, 2026. Across Hellman Hollow, Lindley and Marx Meadows, the free festival brought together legends, rising artists, and musicians who defy easy labels. The lineup ranged from Mavis Staples, Los Lobos and Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives to My Morning Jacket, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Molly Tuttle, and the Old Crow Medicine Show.

There was plenty of history on the stages, too. Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant with Saving Grace and Suzi Dian, Steve Earle & the Hardly Strictly Dukes, and Buddy Miller shared a festival that has always treated musical boundaries as suggestions rather than rules. The 2026 gathering also carried a few especially poignant moments, including Ron Thomason’s final Hardly Strictly appearance and a tribute to Joe Ely featuring The Flatlanders and friends. Rilo Kiley, reunited after a long hiatus, joined the Saturday lineup after Alison Krauss & Union Station canceled their appearance.

San Francisco Bay Times supporter and artist Barbara Higbie performed and photographer Mike Kirschner attended—juggling this festival with time at the Castro Street Fair! (We wish these gatherings would not conflict each year.) He said: “Aaron Lee Tasjan was incredible. Elizabeth Cook was very good. Rilo Kiley was amazing and everyone in her band seems to be multi-instrumental and seriously talented. And that little purple object she’s singing through, the Pooh Megaphone, really messed with her voice in a hilarious way! I love it when musicians show their sense of humor.”

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Hardly Strictly remains what it doesn’t cost. There are no tickets, no VIP fences separating the crowd from the music, and no expectation that you arrive knowing exactly what you want to hear. That having been said, this year drew such large crowds that, for the first time in the festival’s history, the gates had to be temporarily closed. But that challenge was short lived and overshadowed by the festival’s overall success. In a city where almost everything seems to come with a price tag, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass remains a generous gift: three days when San Francisco simply opens the park and lets the music play.
