Grammy Nominee Nadirah Shakoor’s Return to the Castro

Nadirah Shakoor, a Grammy-nominated recording artist well known as the featured female vocalist in Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band and as a lead in the group Arrested Development, returned to the Castro on April 27, 2025, to perform at the birthday party for San Francisco Bay Times co-publisher/co-editor Dr. Betty Sullivan. The event, held at Catch French Bistro in the Castro, was also a fundraiser for the San Francisco Dyke March.

Joined by Donna Sachet, Shakoor sang “Happy Birthday” to Sullivan and was accompanied by Dr. Dee Spencer on piano and the dancing trio of Warren Alderson, Steve Scheitlin, and Bay Times volunteer coordinator Juan Davila. Her performance additionally included some of her original works as well as song classics by the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and more.

Alderson and Scheitlin also assisted Shakoor on a shopping tour of local boutiques to design a custom “Pirate Beauty” outfit she will debut this week during the “Pirateheads Musical Voyage through the Caribbean,” a luxury cruise from Belize to Jamaica. She is performing aboard ship with multiyear CMA Musician of the Year Mac McAnally and others from the Coral Reefer Band created by Buffett (1946–2023) that lives on.

Shakoor’s Soul Circle bracelet collection was a sellout hit during the Dyke March Benefit on April 27. To see the one-of-a-kind bracelets, visit @soulsingah or email Soulcircles4U@gmail.com and watch one of Shakoor’s other recent performances: https://bit.ly/3EAxXUT
