Harvey Milk Terminal 1 at SFO Officially Opens After Final Construction Phase

To mark the fourth and final phase of the construction of the $2.5 billion Harvey Milk Terminal 1 at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), a ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the terminal on June 17, 2024. Mayor London Breed, SFO Director Ivar Satero (who is retiring at the end of the year), and other officials did the honor.

The eight-year project includes a new ticket counter area, mezzanine-level security checkpoint, two new gates, a museum gallery, a connecting walkway that links every SFO terminal post-security, new concessions, additional baggage claim areas, and more.

Previously, the award-winning SFO Museum organized a public call for material related to the life of Supervisor Milk, which resulted in an exhibit of 100 images that remained in place during the new terminal’s construction. The work of San Francisco Bay Times lead photographer Rink is represented in the collection.

Pride and Summer Fun at SFO

“Love Illuminates Every Journey” is highlighted on an SFO logo, complete with rainbow-hued hearts in place of airplane windows on the colorful image. Through July 2, there will live Pride-themed entertainment in the new terminal and photo stations in terminals 2 and 3. On June 27, Mercedes Munro, Paju Munro, and CHEER SF will be featured from 10 am–2 pm. On June 28, also from 10 am–2 pm, “Flagging in the Park” will be showcased.

SFO has even created a summer music set list:
