Gomez has done the near-impossible: written a queer coming of age tale that feels entirely fresh and unique. Alternating between vivid descriptions of outrageous performances and whip-smart analysis, Jenkinson makes San Francisco’s drag scene come alive in this engaging tale of artistic flowering. That she’s a female-type-person makes her story atypical and all-the-more fascinating.
