Marking ADA Day at the Roxie Theater: Sign 504 Now! + Vivien’s Wild Ride

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, at 1 pm, the Roxie Theater and the GLBT Historical Society will mark ADA Day with a double feature and a live panel, co-presented with the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities and the Center for Independent Living.

The afternoon will open with Sign 504 Now!, a 30-minute documentary that returns to 1977, when more than 150 disabled activists occupied San Francisco’s Federal Office Building for 26 days, the longest nonviolent occupation of a federal building in U.S. history. Shot by the Queer Blue Light video collective and drawn from the Society’s archives, the film captures the cross-movement solidarity, from the Black Panthers to LGBTQ+ allies, which fueled the action.

Vivien’s Wild Ride will follow. It is a feature-length documentary about iconic local film editor Vivien Hillgrove’s experience with macular degeneration. As Vivien’s eyesight deteriorates, she grapples anew with questions of memory, identity, and artistic survival. In this bold directorial debut, a legendary Bay Area cinematic voice learns to navigate a changing world, redefining belonging, family, and disability through a brilliant collage of sight and sound.

Between the screenings, a panel of disabled activists and artists will reflect on the films and their broader historical context, moderated by Jim LeBrecht and featuring Vivien Hillgrove, Dr. Victor Santiago Pineda, and Dr. Kevin Mintz. Both films will be open-captioned. The showing of Vivien’s Wild Ride will offer audio description on request, and ASL interpretation will be provided for the introductory comments and the panel discussion.

The Roxie Theater is located in San Francisco’s Mission District. Learn more about this event, and other Society events, at our website (https://bit.ly/4gC6WBu) or follow the QR code on this page
