Spanning seven decades of history, the Rebels, Criminals, Pioneers: Masc Heroes of the QPA Queer Photo Archive (1906–1976) exhibit acts as a visual montage of masculine ancestors who boldly defied societal norms. Featuring nearly fifty large-format vintage news photographs, the collection at Queer Arts Featured through September 27, 2026, brings together early 20th century “passing” men, courageous mid-century butches, and stunning gender-variant AFAB individuals. From theatrical performers to everyday trailblazers, this powerful assemblage—co-curated by Leo Vargha and Jenni Olson—offers undeniable proof that masculine queer identity has deep, uninterrupted roots throughout history.
At the heart of the archive are stories of profound courage, highlighting individuals like Jack Starr, Joe Foley, Charles Williams, and James Phipps, who faced arrest simply for existing authentically as men. The exhibition also honors landmark figures of trans history, including Sir Ewan Forbes—a Scottish baron who openly lived as a trans man in the 1950s—and Steve Dain, a California teacher who launched a vital fight for trans rights in the 1970s. Vargha, who is a Warren Wilson College archivist and student filmmaker, worked alongside veteran queer film historian Olson to create this exhibit that captures both the cultural fascination with masculine expression and the enduring legacy of those who lived it.
