By David Landis, The Gay Gourmet—
It’s that time of year again—Pride—when we get to celebrate all things LGBTQ+. San Francisco might be the epicenter for some of the best merrymaking anywhere, but guess what Northern California community also has become more and more queer-friendly? Napa!
Of course, Napa is known far and wide as one of the world’s great wine regions, but, until recently, it hasn’t been a hotbed for a fun-loving queer getaway. That is, until now. To get a sense of why and how Napa grew into such a welcoming locale, I asked some of the local LGBTQ+ movers and shakers for their ideas.

“The Queer Leaders Coalition,” comments Founder and Chair Coach Bailie, “launched post-pandemic in 2023 to help build a more visible, connected, and organized LGBTQ+ community in Napa County. A lot of queer people have lived here for years without necessarily seeing themselves reflected in public life, civic spaces, or cultural events. Our work focuses on relationship-building, volunteerism, advocacy, and creating opportunities for LGBTQ+ people, businesses, artists, and allies to gather and feel a sense of belonging. For Napa Pride 2026, we’re really leaning into the idea that Pride can feel joyful, community-rooted, and uniquely Napa.”

Coach Bailie adds, “People can look forward to expanded Pride activations with local businesses … and more visible partnerships with local hotels, wineries, and restaurants. We want Pride to feel woven into the fabric of Napa Valley itself. The biggest shift (in Napa) has been visibility and confidence. For a long time, many LGBTQ+ people in Napa existed quietly or felt like they had to leave larger parts of themselves behind to comfortably live and work here. Over the past several years, we’ve seen more businesses openly participate in Pride, more local leaders willing to stand publicly with the LGBTQ+ community, and more queer people choosing to stay, build community, and create culture here rather than looking elsewhere for it. Pride has absolutely grown. What started as smaller gatherings has evolved into a countywide community effort involving dozens of businesses, artists, performers, volunteers, and partner organizations. There’s also been growth in LGBTQ+-affirming businesses and business owners becoming more visible and intentional about inclusion. Napa still has work to do, but there’s a growing sense that queer and transgender people are not just welcome here; we are actively helping shape the future and culture of the region.”
A welcome and gorgeous new queer-owned, queer-friendly, and pet-friendly hotel property has just opened—The Charles Napa Valley. Partners Ryan McGarrigan and Charles Gruwell explain why.
“Our theory is that queer-owned and queer-welcoming businesses are thriving in Napa,” shares Ryan, “because the region is moving beyond an older, narrower definition of luxury. Today’s travelers still want beauty, wine, food, and design, but they also want authenticity, warmth, and values they can recognize. Napa is well positioned for that shift because it already understands experience, hospitality, and storytelling. The fact that Visit Napa Valley, the Downtown Napa Association, and the City of Napa have highlighted LGBTQ+ travelers and Pride programming as part of the region’s year-round welcome signals that inclusion is becoming part of the area’s economic and cultural future. We’re proud to be part of that evolution, and excited to help shape what inclusive luxury in Napa can become.”
Charles says, “The mission of The Charles is to create inclusive, stylish, artfully designed boutique hotels where every guest feels genuinely welcomed, respected, safe, and at home … . The Napa property is still young, but it is already becoming a queer gathering space. We are creating a refined, welcoming place where LGBTQ+ travelers, locals, friends, artists, wine lovers, and allies can gather comfortably and feel a sense of belonging.”

Another queer-friendly culinary offering is Q Restaurant and Bar. General Manager Kelly Sherman says, “The Q Restaurant & Bar opened in 2007 in the Bel Aire Plaza. The opening team included many of the staff of our (former) San Francisco restaurant, MECCA, widely known as (an) innovator of social dining. (Q Restaurant and Bar) was named in the San Francisco Chronicle Top 100 and Top Ten new openings in 2007. The Q was also awarded a Bib Gourmand by The Michelin Guide, and lauded as #1 by Sunset Magazine. Our mission is to provide a great casual dining experience with fine dining sensibilities. The menu features American fare with southern influences (including) southern fried chicken and Memphis-style barbecue.”
Gay-owned Deuces Market, a European-style communal food market, is located in downtown Napa. Owner Mike Casey describes it as “a true ‘community market’ where folks can gather over coffee, wine, and house-made bites.” Hetalks further about the evolution of queer Napa. “It’s been a very rewarding journey,” says Mike. “We originally wanted to promote a space that was LGBTQ+-owned, and a welcoming gathering place for our community. It has thankfully grown much beyond our core community, thanks to the amazing support of our allies in Napa and surrounding areas. We proudly fly a rainbow flag out front to let folks know all our welcome, and the vibe is kindness. Now, more than ever, we receive comments from guests expressing they’re happy to support a business that has these values.”

Gay Gentleman Farmer Wines co-owners Jeff Durham and Joe Wolosz not only oversee a thriving wine business, but they’ve also opened The Bungalow in downtown Napa, a craftsman home that has been redesigned and remodeled around a demonstration kitchen. The partners describe it as a “studio for gustatory well-being. The Gentleman Farmer Bungalow is not a tasting room, nor is it a restaurant. It’s a family kitchen with a heavy pour. Think—Julia Child is Joey’s aunt, and the Royal Tenenbaums are Jeff’s cousins.” Jeff says, “(Are we) a queer gathering place? Our door is always open to everyone. We had a gay California flag at our home in Yountville, and we decided to get another for the Gentleman Farmer Bungalow. The response is very interesting. Guests walk up our stairs to check us out because they have seen the gay flag out front. It’s a sign that all are welcome. We choose to keep that flag out every day.”
Other great queer-owned businesses to check out include: Blue Water Day Spa, Majuscule Wine, Graze Provisions, and Decant Napa Bottle Shop and Bar.
So, with that in mind, hop on up to Napa, where you can revel in LGBTQ+ style for Pride.
