The boys of summer are back, with the San Francisco Giants having opened the 2026 MLB season on March 25, 2026, at Oracle Park with a series against the New York Yankees. The traditional home opener was on March 27. Both games included dazzling pregame ceremonies with military flyovers and fireworks, plus beautiful performances of the National Anthem. What also made these games memorable—although the Giants lost the series—was the presence of radio broadcasting legend Suzyn Waldman of WFAN. Since the 2005 season, she has been the Color Commentator for the Yankees. Like Frank Sinatra, whose music plays following Yankees home games in New York, her voice is iconic with the Big Apple. Her intimate, conversational phrasing, precise diction, immense breath control, and more evidence her years on the Broadway stage. Waldman’s knowledge of baseball is also astounding, not to mention her meaningful friendships with players and managers past and present from multiple teams. Their mutual respect carries through her work. It was sweltering on March 27 at Oracle Park, but Waldman—wearing a cool, crisp white shirt and elegant pants—strode onto the field with more chutzpah than Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada.
There is nothing like a game at Oracle—one of the most striking ballparks in the nation—and there is no other like the brilliant and ever-amazing Waldman. She will soon be back in Northern California when the A’s take on the Yankees at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento in late May.
