Sister Dana Sez, “Welcome to Spring…”

By Sister Dana Van Iquity, Words of Wisdumb from a Fun Nun—

Sister Dana sez, “Welcome to spring, which began March 20. Hopefully it will NOT include record-beating heat waves and citywide power outages like March 20 in SF! Nor, I must protest, more senseless wars!”

The largest LGBTQ party in the Bay Area helped celebrate the 98th annual Academy Awards on March 15 in the largest nightclub in the Castro, The Café, where my Krewe de Kinque Bal Masque XXIII and stepping down KdK King & Queen XXII John Brett & Olivia Hart rolled out the red carpet, live-streaming the OSCARS on a huge wall of screens. So many, many past KdK Kings & Queens performed live. The Second Line Parade was led by Grand Marshal Queen Cougar. And capping off the festivities was the crowning of KdK King XXIII Todd Hotty & KdK Queen XXIII Fabulosa

Each year on March 31, the world observes Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) to raise awareness about transgender people. It is a day to celebrate the lives and contributions of trans people, while also drawing attention to the disproportionate levels of poverty, discrimination, and violence the community faces compared to cisgender (non-transgender) people. San Francisco Community Health Center, which for nearly 40 years has provided critical healthcare and social services in the Tenderloin and beyond, will hold its Show of Hope gala dinner on April 4, 5:30 pm in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency San Francisco, 5 Embarcadero Center. Retired LGBT Center Executive Director Rebecca Rolfe, Director of San Francisco Transgender Initiatives Honey Mahogany, and journalist Reggie Aqui will be honored there. A special tribute to the late Ward 86 social worker, Alberto Rangel, will honor his life, legacy, and unwavering commitment to the community.A performance by The Boy Band Project will close out the evening. We Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are delighted to invite neighbors across the Bay Area to our Annual Easter Celebration, “Easter in the Park: Love Thy Neighbor,” on Sunday, April 5, on the north end of Mission Dolores Park near the tennis courts. Festivities will begin with Children’s Easter at 10 am, followed by the main stage celebration with live entertainment from noon to 4 pm. Note on our theme: “Love Thy Neighbor” is a joy-fueled reminder that our neighbors are not “others”—they are family. In a time when neighborhoods are being divided by fear and misinformation, the Sisters are calling communities back to the radical idea of love, showing up for one another, regardless of our differences. This is exactly what the Sisters’ mission has always stood for: universal joy, acceptance, and unapologetic solidarity with targeted communities.

But, before that, on Good Friday, April 3, from 6–8 pm, a new community-driven project will transform Room 204 at The LGBT Center at 1800 Market Street into a vibrant space celebrating the history of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The display, led by Novice Sister Lolly Gagg’N as part of a Novice Project, aims to educate visitors about the legacy, activism, and cultural impact of us Sisters. This is in collaboration with The LGBT Center’s Timothy Hampton, Tammy Pham, and Michael Pembridge. The project will feature curated historical images from the Sisters’ archives, selected in collaboration with original members and archive leaders. We are honored to have mixed media painter, sculptor, and installation artist Deidre Defranceaux displaying her Sister Artwork in the Rainbow Room. There will be a Queer Joy Unleashed: Afterparty, 9:30 pm–late at the Lookout, 3600 16th Street @ Market, 21+ w/photo ID.

And the national good news is that the Pentagon’s horrendous policy regarding the press has been ruled against by the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C., having found that the policy that allowed officials to revoke credentials from reporters who sought or published unauthorized information, has violated the First Amendment, and that the federal government had “overly broad authority” to control access to the press corps. Sister Dana sez, “Sorry, Trump butt-smooching fake news reporters, but you now have to make room for those TRUE reporters who report The Real News!”

The national NO KINGS MARCH protest will begin on March 28, which is expected to be the largest in American history: 3,000 events are planned in all 50 states! Last June, NKM brought out 5 million demonstrators, and then another 7 million in October. https://indivisiblesf.org/

HUNKY JESUS, which premiered on March 18 at the London BFI film festival, is a feature documentary that explores the legacy of our San Francisco chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence—queer and trans “nuns” who combat guilt, shame, and exclusion through joy, humor, activism, and irreverence, serving our communities while challenging bigotry and redefining spirituality. Each year, our irreverent Easter Sunday pageant (which many refer to by just one of our contests for “Hunky Jesus”) transforms a San Francisco park into sacred ground for seekers of all kinds: outsiders, misfits, and the spiritually curious who gather in search of belonging, inclusion, and divine fabulousness. This film by Jennifer Kroot brilliantly documents past “Hunky Jesus” contests with commentary by legendary George Takei and some Sisters. Included was our incredible 1987 “Exorcism” at Union Square during Pope John Paul II’s visit to San Francisco, shortly after he declared homosexuality an “intrinsic evil.” An added bonus is a haunting rendition of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” performed by the incomparable John Cameron Mitchell. I really hope this memorable film will be considered at our annual SF Frameline Film Festival and elsewhere!

Bad news: the Trump Madministration has doubled the number of U.S. ground troops deploying to the Middle East for the war with Iran. Another 2,500 troops were on their way on March 21. On March 19, Trump lied to the press, “No, I’m not putting troops anywhere; and if I was, I wouldn’t tell YOU!” Meanwhile he has requested $200 BILLION more for war. And another trillion bucks is being added to our National Debt every five months! Wake up, Republicans and fiscal hawks, who used to be so extremely concerned about “The Deficit”!

Also, it is imperative that true historians point back to another unnecessary and tragic war against Iraqin 2003, which took about 20 years to get out of there. Now Trump is doubling down on hints to “take Cuba.” Stop this power-hungry, narcissistic, warmonger president!

But the wars will cease as of April 1. Oh yeah, also APRIL FOOLS DAY is April first.

Sister Dana sez, “We ARE at war with Iran (4th week now) by choice of Commander-in-Stupidity DarnOld Trump! Is it an EXCURSION (as Trump said) or an INCURSION? I sincerely and sadly (angrily) believe that it is the latter! Stop the War!”
