This year’s coronavirus pandemic has brought new experiences to us all in ways we never could have dreamed of when 2020 began. The San Francisco Bay Times asked photographs Drew Altizer and Rink to capture the sights and scenes of the Castro, showing how life here has been affected. From face masks and social distancing to shared space seating in front of restaurants, the centerfold of this issue captures moments of this unprecedented period in our lifetimes.
The City’s “Shared Spaces” program is making it easier to use the sidewalk, parking lanes, or entire streets for business during the pandemic. A request via the program calls for the closure to traffic during certain hours of 18th Street between Hartford and Collingwood, including the popular Rainbow Crosswalk intersection and the sidewalk area in front of the Bank of America known historically as “Hibernia Beach.” As of this writing, officials and business owners are still trying to negotiate how that closure may best be done safely and effectively.

In the meantime, if possible, please support your favorite small businesses. These establishments in neighborhoods such as the Castro and Chinatown in San Francisco have taken a harder hit than most and could really use public support. There are some great, unprecedented deals now at stores, restaurants, and more, so you will be glad that you did!
