At 12:50 am on September 16, 2026, Salesforce’s login service began waiting on a response that wasn’t coming. By morning, pipelines had vanished, logins had failed, and teams across every region were relearning an old truth: when the cloud falls down, most of modern work becomes people staring at a loading screen. This all happened during Dreamforce, when Salesforce hosted over 40,000 people to hear about the frictionless, intelligent future of enterprise software. Ironically, parts of the machinery meant to deliver that future spent hours down.
There’s something wonderfully old-fashioned about a crisis that ends in humans improvising around a broken system. Roughly 440 years ago, another ambitious operation found itself in the exact same posture. In 1586, Sir Francis Drake’s men were dying of scurvy off Florida, so a shore party went looking for a fix and came back with chuchuhuasi, an Amazonian bark, muddled with aguardiente, lime, sugar, and mint. It worked. History filed it under El Draque, the first recorded cocktail, and Havana bartenders later refined the formula, dropped the bark, swapped in rum, and called it a mojito. Nobody remembers the bark. The infrastructure disappears; the interface gets remembered.

Chuchuhuasi’s name literally translates to “trembling back,” which reads as either a diagnosis of arthritis or an accurate summary of watching your CRM go down mid-keynote. Researchers poking at it since the 1980s keep finding the same theme: it settles the body down when everything is inflamed. This, squint a little, is also what an AI harness is supposed to do for your infrastructure. One has been in production for four centuries. The other is still in presentation mode.

So, while the status page refreshes and someone’s Slack fills with “still down for me,” muddle lime, mint, and sugar in a rocks glass. Add aguardiente or rum, because adaptability was the whole point of the original story, and a sliver of chuchuhuasi, if you can find it. Shake it. Pour over ice. Slap the mint. Drink to the oldest resilience strategy on record: when the system fails, the humans find a way. No cloud is required.

The Dreamforce Draque
A 440-year-old resilience strategy, updated for a modern outage
Ingredients
1 lime, cut into wedges
2 tsp sugar
4–6 mint leaves
2 oz aguardiente or white rum
chuchuhuasi, to infuse the spirit for up to an hour beforehand, if available
ice
Add the lime, sugar, and mint to a rocks glass and muddle it like you’ve personally been assigned the incident ticket, but nobody’s given you admin access. Add the aguardiente or rum and fill with ice. Stir thoroughly, or shake briefly and strain back over ice if you want the sugar fully dissolved. Garnish with a slapped mint sprig. Drink while refreshing the status page.
