When I started writing about wine more than two decades ago, one of my first memories of Napa was a visit to Duckhorn Vineyards. I remember being star struck when I walked through their Estate House tasting room door. I pinched myself, tempered my wide grin, and soaked in the atmosphere of this bucolic place.
Recently, that wide-eyed sense of excitement I felt on my first visit struck again. I was lucky enough to attend the 50th anniversary celebration for this Napa Valley icon. We sampled old vintages alongside current ones, and sat on the porch enchanted by vineyard views and a menu that paired perfectly with the wines. The night wrapped up toasting to their history … and future.

Duckhorn Vineyards was founded in 1976 when Dan and Margaret Duckhorn became part of an emerging local wine scene that would bring worldwide attention to Napa Valley. Dan was intensely focused on advancing modern viticulture with the goal to craft world-class wines. Margaret complemented her husband by channeling her energies into building the brand’s focus on hospitality and community leadership. With only four winemakers in five decades, the winemaking team has been directed since 2014 by Executive Winemaker Renée Ary, whose guidance has led to a rich roster of the industry’s highest accolades.
If you are already a Duckhorn fan or want to celebrate history-making wines in style, I recommend both of their 50th anniversary bottlings.

2025 Duckhorn Vineyards “50th Anniversary” Sauvignon Blanc, North Coast, California $32
As leaders in crafting pure California versions of French grape varieties, Duckhorn has been making signature sauvignon blanc since 1982. This unique bottling blends racy sauvignon blanc with a kiss of silky sémillon for a supple white overflowing with citrus-laden freshness. Enjoy poolside or tableside.
2023 Duckhorn Vineyards “50th Anniversary” Merlot, Napa Valley, California $58
Merlot is synonymous with Duckhorn. Inspired by a visit to Bordeaux, France, where merlot shines, Dan Duckhorn made the winery’s first vintage in 1978. It often plays second fiddle to its blending partner, cabernet sauvignon, but Duckhorn’s commitment to showcasing the red variety was key in elevating merlot domestically. Today, Duckhorn’s merlots rank among the best in the world (or THE BEST according to famed wine publications). This version seamlessly blends in dashes of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and malbec. Intense dark fruit notes with hints of cacao and spice are wrapped in a lush texture—it’s like drinking cashmere.
