Independent commissions, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, are under threat now in San Francisco. The Commission Streamlining Task Force has been making recommendations about ways to modify, eliminate, or combine the city’s boards and commissions “to improve the administration of city government.” Over 40% of the city’s boards and commissions may be eliminated or consolidated.

Sophia Andary of the Commission on the Status of Women, who is also a Co-Founder of the Women’s March, shares that “there is nothing efficient about weakening civilian oversight or eroding accountability.” She and others are calling attention to related meetings and events over the next several days permitting public input. One of the most important will take place on March 17, when the San Francisco Board of Supervisors will review the Commission Streamlining Task Force (Prop E) recommendations. The public may provide comment at this meeting, which will be held in San Francisco City Hall Legislative Chamber Room 250 at 2 pm. On March 19, there will be a City Hall hearing, from 10 am–1 pm, urging an Executive Directive and Citywide Action Plan to advance women and gender equity. Letters expressing views about any of these matters may be emailed to Board.of.Supervisors@sfgov.org
