The Castro Farmers’ Market Returns for the Season

    By Debra Morris–

Strike up the band and pass the veggies! The Castro Farmers’ Market returns for the season on Wednesday, March 13, 4 pm to 8 pm, at Noe and Market Streets. Opening day will bring the community together for another season of fun-filled events, music and great produce—everything from fruits to nuts!

There will be a lively ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 pm with brief remarks from District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman and other elected officials. Donna Sachet, the Queen of the Castro and a fellow San Francisco Bay Times columnist, will be the MC for the evening, and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will offer a blessing of the market.

Kick up your heels with musical entertainment for the opening hour provided by Miss Connie Champagne, followed by the Black Pack with awesome cover songs. Kids can enjoy spectacular arts and crafts with creative performer Llano River Blue, sponsored by Flore (2298 Market Street).

More than two dozen California farmers and other local food producers are expected to sell their products at the market on opening day. Mia Simmans, Manager of the Castro Farmers’ Market, says, “We are looking forward to kicking off the season with a bang. We have a lot of great activities and events planned and we will offer a terrific selection of California produce.” Throughout the year, patrons can enjoy an array of musical entertainment, tastings, kids’ crafts and other events.

The market, which is sponsored by the Castro Merchants Association, provides Castro residents a direct opportunity to support local California farmers. These local farms will offer a variety of seasonal California produce, like fresh asparagus from Jacob’s Farm of Los Banos, citrus from Ken’s Top Notch from Fresno, organic veggies from Happy Boy Farms out of Watsonville, juicy strawberries from Berrylicious in Gilroy, organic fruits and nuts from Allard Farms out of Westley, and smoked salmon from our newest producer, Coastside Farms and Specialties.

The market will also have pasture-raised eggs from Shelly’s Farm in Brentwood, delicious baked goods from Feel Good Bakery of Alameda, fresh tamales from Donna’s Tamales out of Martinez and much more.

Celebrate your local community, all the freshest produce that local farmers can provide, and visit with friends. Come down and start a fresh new season with us at your Castro Farmers’ Market! We’ll be here through November 20. See you there!
