    Celebration Marks First International Exhibition of Original Rainbow Flag

    The Consulate General of Ireland and the GLBT Historical Society and Museum staged a historic LGBTQ+ celebration on August 13, 2026, at Casements Bar in the Mission.

    In March, the GLBT Historical Society Museum and Cork Public Museum signed a historic memorandum of understanding, paving the way for the first international loan and exhibition of the original rainbow flag. I and fellow San Francisco Bay Times columnists Dr. Bill Lipsky and Donna Sachet joined the group for a celebratory send-off before this iconic piece of LGBTQ+ history traveled across the Atlantic from San Francisco to Ireland. The flag is now displayed at the Cork Public Museum for four months.

    Created by Gilbert Baker in San Francisco in 1978, the rainbow Pride flag has become one of the most recognized symbols of LGBTQ+ visibility, resilience, and liberation around the world. Its journey to Cork is especially meaningful given the sister city relationship between San Francisco and Cork, making Cork the first international stop on the flag’s global tour.
